Chennai Traffic police launches programme to enhance student safety

In a proactive move to bolster safety measures for students, the Greater Chennai City Traffic Police (GCTP) has rolled out the “School Traffic Volunteers” program in five city schools. The initiative, inaugurated by Commissioner of Police Sandeep Rai Rathore at Vidyodaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, T. Nagar, aims to enlist parents and teachers as volunteers to manage traffic flow around school premises effectively. This endeavor aligns with the National Road Safety Policy guidelines, emphasizing community involvement in ensuring safer road environments.

Launched on February 9, 2024, the program is designed to impart essential road safety education to students, parents, and teachers alike. Master trainers sourced from the Police Department will conduct interactive sessions to educate participants on traffic regulations, pedestrian safety protocols, and the significance of understanding traffic signage. By equipping stakeholders with practical knowledge and awareness, the initiative seeks to cultivate a culture of responsible road behavior among all involved parties.

Central to the program’s execution are the enrolled school traffic volunteers, comprising dedicated parents and teachers, who will actively contribute to managing traffic dynamics during peak hours around school premises. Supported by Road Safety Patrol (RSP) cadets, these volunteers will play a pivotal role in regulating traffic flow during crucial periods such as school opening and closing times. Their presence aims to alleviate congestion, minimize risks, and enhance overall safety for students commuting to and from school.
