In a significant move aimed at enhancing security and monitoring in the pharmaceutical sector, the Chennai District Collector has issued an order making it mandatory for all pharmacies in the district to install CCTV cameras. The directive, issued on Monday, March 5, 2024, requires pharmacies without CCTV cameras to take immediate action, as non-compliance will result in legal repercussions.
Under the order, pharmacies in Chennai selling drugs listed in Schedule “X” and “H”, as well as “H1” drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act-1940 and -1945, are required to install surveillance cameras within 30 days from the issuance date of the order. Pharmacies failing to comply with this requirement by April 5, 2024, will face criminal action, as stated in the order issued under section 133 of the Criminal Procedure Act-1973.
Chennai District Collector Rashmi Siddharth Jagade, IAS, emphasized the importance of this measure in ensuring the safety and accountability of pharmaceutical practices. “Surveillance cameras should be installed within 30 days from the day of issuance of this order,” stated the press release issued by the district Collector.
The directive underscores the need for pharmacies to adopt modern security measures to prevent illicit activities and ensure the integrity of the pharmaceutical supply chain. By implementing CCTV surveillance, authorities aim to monitor and deter any unauthorized activities, including the sale of counterfeit drugs or illegal substances.
Furthermore, the order emphasizes the accountability of pharmacy owners, stating that failure to equip dispensaries with surveillance cameras during inspections will result in appropriate legal action.
