The Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHCAA) conducted a significant demonstration on Friday, urging the arrest of the key accused in the brutal murder of BSP state unit president and lawyer K Armstrong. They also called for the immediate enactment of the Advocates Protection Bill.K Armstrong, a prominent Dalit leader, was tragically murdered by a six-member bike-borne gang in Perambur on July 5. The murder has sparked widespread outrage among the legal community and the public, leading to various demonstrations and demands for swift justice.
More than 150 advocates and lawyers gathered at the Madras High Court premises to participate in the demonstration. The participants raised slogans demanding the expedited arrest of the key accused in Armstrongās murder case. They emphasized the need for the state government to take immediate action to ensure justice is served.
In addition to seeking justice for Armstrong, the advocates called for the enactment of the Advocates Protection Bill. This legislation aims to safeguard lawyers from life threats and ensure their safety while performing their professional duties. The bill’s proponents argue that it is crucial for protecting the legal community and maintaining the rule of law.
Members of the Women Lawyers Association also joined the demonstration, showing solidarity and demanding justice for Armstrong. The protesters later held a procession, which resulted in a traffic jam on NSC Bose Road, highlighting the urgency and seriousness of their demands.
The demonstration by MHCAA follows a similar protest held on Thursday by the Democratic Advocates Association (DAA) and the Advocates Association for Equality (AAE) at the High Court premises. These continuous demonstrations underscore the collective call from the legal community for immediate action and protection.
