New Delhi, July 17: Jarmanpreet Singh, a pivotal defender in India’s Paris Games hockey squad, has overcome significant hurdles in his career to stand on the brink of Olympic glory once again. Initially hailed as a rising star in Indian hockey, Jarmanpreet’s journey was abruptly halted by a doping suspension that left his career in jeopardy during his junior days.

**Jalandhar’s Talent:** A product of Jalandhar’s Surjit Singh Hockey Academy, named after the late Indian captain and World Cup winner, Jarmanpreet quickly rose through the ranks with his robust playstyle and adeptness at creating opportunities from the right flank. His early promise led to selection in the Punjab franchise of the now-defunct Hockey India League at just 18, where he honed his skills alongside global talent.

However, his career took a devastating turn in 2015 when a failed dope test, resulting from an innocuous injection for lower back pain administered by a local doctor, led to a two-year ban. Forced to return to his village Rajdhan in Amritsar, Jarmanpreet faced an uncertain future, unable to compete at any level of competitive hockey.

Undeterred, Jarmanpreet persevered, maintaining his fitness through rigorous training with his brother and childhood coaches. His comeback began in earnest in 2017 when he returned to the domestic circuit, catching the eye of selectors once more with his stellar performance at Nationals.

Jarmanpreet’s determination bore fruit with his reinstatement into the national squad, debuting in 2018 and contributing to India’s silver medal at the Champions Trophy in Breda, Netherlands. Despite setbacks under subsequent coaches, his perseverance paid off when Craig Fulton assumed leadership, propelling him to prominence with strategic roles in defense and attack.

Named to India’s 16-member squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Jarmanpreet’s selection marked a poignant moment in his career, coinciding with the birth of his daughter on the same day. Embracing Fulton’s ‘defend to win’ ethos, Jarmanpreet has evolved into a linchpin of the team, poised to realize his Olympic dream and contribute to India’s medal ambitions in Paris.

Reflecting on his journey, Jarmanpreet remains focused on making a significant impact at the Olympics, underscoring the resilience and determination that define his remarkable comeback story.
