Paris, July 31: In a compelling display of skill and resilience, the Indian men’s hockey team secured their place in the quarterfinals of the Paris 2024 Olympics with a 2-0 victory over Ireland. The match, held at Stade Yves Du Manoir, saw India temporarily rise to the top of Pool B with seven points, ahead of Belgium and Australia, who are set to play later in the day.
Harmanpreet Singh was the standout performer for India, scoring both goals in the first half under punishing heat. His clinical finish from a penalty stroke in the 11th minute and a powerful drag-flick in the 19th minute ensured India’s advancement to the knockout stage.
From the onset, India demonstrated their intent. Abhishek’s early work on the left flank resulted in India’s first penalty corner within two minutes. The breakthrough came when Gurjant’s interception led to a penalty stroke, which Harmanpreet executed flawlessly, beating Irish goalkeeper David Harte.
After a prolonged inter-quarter break due to the extreme heat, which allowed Indian goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh a much-needed rest, India continued their assertive play. Harmanpreet’s second goal came from a penalty corner, deflecting off an Irish defender’s stick into the top corner.
Despite dominating the first half, India faced a strong challenge from Ireland in the third quarter. The Irish team, having previously fought hard against Belgium and Australia, won eight penalty corners in a flurry of activity. However, Sreejesh and the Indian defense held their ground, denying Ireland any goals.
In the final quarter, Ireland continued to apply pressure, earning two more penalty corners, including one in the last minute. Yet, India’s defense remained steadfast, ensuring the clean sheet and securing the win.
With this result, India’s place in the quarterfinals was confirmed following Argentina’s win over New Zealand. The victory not only underscores India’s strong group stage performance but also sets up an exciting quarter final clash.
