India’s men’s hockey team falls to Germany

India’s men’s hockey team narrowly missed out on reaching the Olympic final for the first time in 44 years after a 2-3 defeat to Germany in the semifinals of the Paris Olympics on Tuesday.

Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh gave his team an early lead by scoring in the 7th minute. Sukhjeet Singh extended India’s advantage with a goal in the 36th minute. However, Germany’s potent offense proved decisive, with goals from Gonzalo Peillat (18th minute), Christopher Ruhr (27th minute), and Marco Miltkau (54th minute) securing their place in the final.

This loss means India will now face Spain in the bronze medal playoff. Germany, ranked fourth in the world, will compete against the Netherlands for the gold medal.

India’s squad had demonstrated impressive resilience throughout the tournament, including a dramatic quarter-final match against Great Britain where they advanced despite being reduced to 10 men. Despite their strong performance, the team fell just short in this crucial semifinal.

The match saw Harmanpreet Singh and Sukhjeet Singh scoring for India, while Germany’s Peillat, Ruhr, and Miltkau found the back of the net. The German team, who had previously edged out Argentina 3-2 in the quarterfinals, proved to be a tough opponent.

India, the most decorated nation in Olympic hockey history with 12 medals—including eight golds—has not reached the final since the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The team’s journey to the bronze medal match continues to be closely watched by hockey fans.

The upcoming bronze medal playoff against Spain will be a crucial opportunity for India to secure a podium finish and continue their legacy in Olympic hockey.
