Chennai residents head to hometowns amidst long weekend

Due to the extended holiday weekend, residents of Chennai began traveling to their hometowns, leading to significant crowds at bus and railway stations on Tuesday.
Today, August 15, is a public holiday for Independence Day. By taking a day off on Friday, many can enjoy a continuous break until Sunday. As a result, people from major cities like Chennai are heading to their native places. To accommodate the surge in travelers, special buses have been arranged.
Starting Tuesday evening, people began leaving Chennai, causing traffic congestion in areas like Tambaram and Perungalathur. Similarly, railway stations such as Chennai Central, Egmore, and Tambaram witnessed heavy crowds.
Officials from the State Transport Corporation stated that over 450 special buses were operated from Chennai’s Koyambedu to various cities, including Tiruvannamalai, Trichy, Kumbakonam, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Coimbatore, Salem, Erode, and Tiruppur. Additionally, 365 more special buses will be operated on August 16 and 17. Special buses are also being run from Koyambedu and Madhavaram bus terminals.
