Pelican crossings to boost pedestrian safety in city

In a significant move to enhance pedestrian safety, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) is introducing pelican crossings at key traffic junctions across the city. These ‘Pedestrian Light Controlled’ crossings, already popular worldwide and in cities like Coimbatore, are being implemented to provide a safer and more convenient way for pedestrians to cross busy roads.

As part of a trial run, four pelican crossings have been installed along Poonamallee High Road (EVR Periyar Salai). These crossings allow pedestrians to press a button that turns the traffic signal red, temporarily halting vehicles and enabling safe passage across the road.

A senior GCTP officer revealed that more than 50 junctions in Chennai will soon be equipped with pelican signals. Unlike traditional fixed-timing signals, these crossings will adapt based on real-time traffic conditions, offering significant benefits, particularly for the elderly and disabled pedestrians.

The introduction of pelican crossings marks a progressive step towards making Chennai’s roads safer and more pedestrian-friendly, aligning with global best practices in traffic management.
