Where is democracy, asks Tamilisai

In a sharp critique of the ruling DMK government, former Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan questioned the democratic process behind the elevation of Udhayanidhi Stalin as Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister.

In her statement, Tamilisai claimed that DMK’s leadership had pressured alliance party leaders to support Udhayanidhi’s appointment. She criticized the move, stating, “If the father is the Chief Minister and the son is the Deputy Chief Minister, where is democracy in this? This cannot be called a democratic process. The DMK is heading towards monarchy. The position has been given solely because Udhayanidhi is Karunanidhi’s grandson and Stalin’s son.”

She further highlighted the lack of representation for women in the new cabinet appointments, despite the DMK’s frequent claims about social justice and equal opportunities. “No new opportunities were given to women in the cabinet. You often speak about social justice and equal opportunity, but where has that social justice gone?”

Tamilisai also raised concerns about the reappointment of V Senthil Balaji, who was recently released on bail in a corruption case. “It is not only a wrong example, but it shows that dynastic politics is not good for Tamil Nadu’s political future. They hurriedly reinstated Senthil Balaji as a minister, even though he is out on bail.”

Her remarks reflect growing opposition concerns over the concentration of power within the DMK leadership and the direction of governance under Stalin’s administration.
