The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Chennai and six other districts in Tamil Nadu on October 17, due to a depression over the Bay of Bengal, which is causing heavy downpours and flooding in several parts of the state. Alongside Chennai, districts such as Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, and others are also expected to experience intense rainfall, while a yellow alert has been issued for additional regions.
The IMD has warned that the depression is likely to pass over northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh, potentially bringing more rainfall to these areas. Southern Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Kerala, and southern Karnataka are also forecasted to experience significant rainfall.
In response to the heavy rains, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin stated that efforts to clear water stagnation in most parts of Chennai are underway. To support residents affected by the flooding, Stalin announced that food would be served free of cost at all Amma canteens in Chennai today, providing relief to those in need.
