In a significant leap toward modernising urban transportation, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to inaugurate the test run of the city’s first driverless train as part of its ambitious Phase II expansion. Scheduled to be flagged off next week by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, this test run marks a milestone for Chennai’s transportation infrastructure, reflecting its commitment to incorporating cutting-edge technology to better serve the public.
Milestone for Phase II Expansion
The driverless train, designed with Unattended Train Operation (UTO) capabilities, was developed by the French multinational Alstom. This three-car train, delivered to the Poonamallee depot on October 17, 2024, underwent initial testing at Sricity before making its way to Chennai. This is the first of many driverless train sets planned for the Phase II project, which spans an impressive 118.9 kilometers, positioning it as one of the largest metro expansion projects in India.
With an investment running into billions, the Phase II expansion aims to enhance the connectivity of Chennai’s metro network across new areas, thereby reducing traffic congestion and promoting sustainable urban transport. The Chennai Metro’s move to driverless operations aligns with global trends, as cities around the world increasingly adopt automation in public transit for improved safety, efficiency, and reliability.
Planned Operations and Future Expansion
Following the inauguration, the driverless train will be subjected to a series of rigorous tests and safety checks to ensure reliable operations on Chennai’s tracks. Initially, the UTO train will operate along Corridor 4, connecting the busy areas from Light House to the Poonamallee Bus Depot, one of the priority routes of the expansion. By late 2025, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) aims to start operational services between Poonamallee and Porur Junction, a high-density route anticipated to alleviate travel times and enhance convenience for daily commuters.
To support the metro’s growing network, Alstom is set to deliver an additional 36 three-car driverless trains. These upcoming additions will further bolster Chennai’s vision of a robust, state-of-the-art metro network that can accommodate the city’s expanding population and evolving mobility needs.
A New Era for Urban Transit in Chennai
As the driverless train hits the tracks for its initial test run, Chennai residents are witnessing the advent of a new era in urban transit. With the introduction of automated trains, the Chennai Metro Rail is paving the way for a smarter, more efficient transportation system that promises reduced operational costs and enhanced passenger safety.
This forward-looking expansion also complements other developments in the city’s infrastructure, aligning with Tamil Nadu’s ambitions to foster sustainable and smart urban growth. The upcoming test run marks not only a technological achievement but also a step toward redefining daily commuting in Chennai, offering a glimpse into the future of public transportation in India.
