Diwali celebrations are driving an impressive surge in sweet sales across Tamil Nadu, with estimates suggesting the market will reach a record Rs. 5,000 crores this season, a substantial leap from last year’s Rs. 4,000 crores. The festive demand is evident as stores across the state are bustling with customers buying sweets and savories in bulk.In recent years, there has been a shift from preparing traditional sweets at home to purchasing ready-made sweets from stores. Major companies have also contributed by gifting sweet boxes to employees as part of their Diwali celebrations. Sweet shops across the state have reported a spike in demand over the past two days, with even larger sales expected today.
K.T. Srinivas Raja, Managing Director of Adyar Ananda Bhavan, one of Tamil Nadu’s most popular sweet chains, shared insights on the factors driving this year’s growth. “This Diwali season, the response has been incredible. Several factors have come together to fuel this demand — favorable weather, an increase in people’s spending capacity, and the convenience of buying sweets ready-made,” he explained.
Raja highlighted the increased role of digital platforms in the sweet market, noting that customers are increasingly choosing online options to purchase their favorite treats. “Apart from in-store purchases, online sales are booming this year, making up nearly 20% of total sales. We’ve seen tremendous growth through online orders, which has expanded our reach across the state.”
At major bus and train stations in Chennai, passengers returning to their hometowns for Diwali can be seen with neatly wrapped boxes of sweets in hand, adding to the atmosphere of the season. “People are eager to share sweets with family and friends during this time. For us, the festive season is not just about sales; it’s about being part of people’s celebrations and traditions,” said Raja.
The increase in demand has also prompted small and large sweet manufacturers to prepare additional stock, ensuring that varieties like laddoos, Mysore pak, and kaju katli remain available throughout the peak season. “We’re prepared for Diwali sales to reach an all-time high. This year, the demand is both unprecedented and heartening. It’s wonderful to see people embracing the spirit of Diwali so enthusiastically,” Raja concluded.
With Diwali celebrations in full swing, the sweet shops across Tamil Nadu are gearing up to meet the festive demand, making this one of the most profitable seasons in recent years.
