Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin addressed the state’s response to the heavy rains and subsequent flooding, stating that the state’s proactive measures had minimized casualties despite the extreme weather conditions. Speaking at the launch of several developmental and welfare schemes in North Chennai, Stalin underscored the growing impacts of climate change, citing that rainfall in Tamil Nadu had exceeded the meteorological forecasts.He emphasized that the Tamil Nadu government had not been negligent in its response, and through early intervention, it had significantly reduced the loss of life. He also pointed out that several districts, including Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri, were heavily impacted by the rains. Stalin assured that the government had been providing the necessary assistance to affected residents since the onset of the rains and was seeking financial support from the central government for further relief efforts.
Reflecting on the government’s past handling of natural disasters, Stalin drew comparisons to the 2015 artificial floods in Chennai, which he claimed had been mishandled by the previous administration. He asserted that despite the current adversities, Tamil Nadu would recover swiftly, just as it had after past floods. Some districts had already made a full recovery, and the overall state was well on its way to recovery.
Criticizing certain political figures who were using the situation to gain political leverage, Stalin dismissed the notion of political opportunism. He recalled a time when the previous administration failed to take prompt action during floods and natural disasters, whereas the present government had demonstrated its commitment by staying on the ground and ensuring relief efforts.
Stalin further lambasted those who were trying to profit from the misery of the people, claiming that during the previous administration, political leaders were rarely seen at the scene of disasters and had no real understanding of the suffering of the people. In contrast, he highlighted that the Tamil Nadu government’s immediate and tangible actions spoke volumes about its dedication to the public.
The Chief Minister concluded by stating that no matter how much rain fell, the government, including himself, his deputy, and other ministers, would remain actively involved in providing relief and helping the people. He emphasized that the most important thing for the government was the welfare and well-being of the people, and that no amount of criticism or political attacks would deter their commitment to service.
