The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to streamline the collection and transportation of construction and demolition waste across all 15 zones of the city starting 17th January 2025, with a fully operational system expected within 4 to 6 weeks, according to GCC Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran.
Intensive Cleanup Drive
In preparation for this initiative, an intensive cleanup drive was conducted on 7th and 13th January 2025, during which 5323 metric tons of construction debris were cleared from within GCC limits. The drive, launched by Chennai Mayor R. Priya, focused on seven zones and utilized 59 vehicles and machines to remove waste effectively.
Designated Dump Points
To prevent illegal dumping and improve waste management efficiency, GCC has established designated dump points in every zone. Waste collected from these points will be transported to the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dump yards for proper disposal.
Objective and Vision
This comprehensive waste management plan aims to enhance Chennai’s waste infrastructure and maintain the city’s cleanliness. The initiative underscores GCC’s commitment to sustainable urban management and addresses a critical need for systematic handling of construction debris.
With these measures, GCC hopes to make Chennai cleaner and more organized, setting an example in effective waste management practices.
