Chennai, known for its vibrant student community, is abuzz with exam preparations as students gear up for their board and university exams.
With multiple distractions around, staying focused can be a challenge. Here are some effective ways to avoid distractions and enhance concentration during this crucial period.
Create a Distraction-Free Study Zone
A quiet and organized study space is essential. Choose a well-lit area with minimal noise and keep only necessary study materials. “Your environment shapes your focus. A clutter-free space leads to a clutter-free mind,” says Dr. Lakshmi Narayan, an education consultant in Chennai.
Limit Social Media and Screen Time
Scrolling through social media can eat up valuable study hours. Consider using apps like Forest or StayFocusd to restrict distractions. Chennai-based student Ravi Shankar, preparing for his 12th board exams, shares, “I keep my phone in another room while studying. It helps me focus without the constant urge to check notifications.”
Follow the Pomodoro Technique
Study in focused intervals (e.g., 25 minutes of study, followed by a 5-minute break). This method helps in maintaining attention while preventing burnout. “Short breaks rejuvenate the mind and improve productivity,” suggests Prof. Meenakshi, a psychology lecturer at Madras University.
Avoid Multitasking
Trying to juggle multiple subjects at once can reduce efficiency. Prioritize tasks and stick to a structured timetable. “Multitasking can lead to half-baked knowledge. Focus on one subject at a time for better retention,” advises education coach Arvind Kumar.
Get Enough Sleep and Exercise
Lack of sleep leads to poor concentration. Ensure 7-8 hours of sleep and incorporate light exercises or yoga to reduce stress. “A healthy mind comes from a healthy body. Regular exercise boosts memory and reduces anxiety,” says fitness trainer Priya Krishnan.
Seek Support When Needed
Discussing doubts with teachers or study groups can help in better understanding. Parents should also create a supportive environment. Mrs. Kavitha, a parent from Chennai, says, “I make sure my son gets nutritious food and a peaceful study environment to help him perform well.”
With a few mindful changes, students can stay disciplined, avoid distractions, and ace their exams with confidence.
