FChennai’s Velachery area, known for its heavy traffic congestion, is set to get much-needed relief as the Tamil Nadu government has announced a new flyover project. Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, in his budget presentation on March 14, 2025, stated that a 3-km-long flyover connecting Guindy and Velachery will be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹310 crore. The project is expected to benefit around seven lakh commuters daily.
The decision comes in response to severe congestion at Guru Nanak College Junction and Five Furlong Road Junction, where a recent traffic survey recorded peak hour volumes of 7,742 and 7,459 passenger car units (PCU), respectively. These intersections are key transit points for commuters traveling between Guindy, Velachery, and adjoining IT hubs.
A senior civic official confirmed that the proposed flyover aims to decongest traffic and improve connectivity in the area. Currently, bottlenecks at these junctions cause long delays, particularly during peak hours.
With Velachery being a rapidly growing residential and commercial hub, the new flyover is expected to enhance mobility, reduce travel time, and improve road safety. Authorities are now expected to finalize the design and initiate construction work soon.
