During the recent Chithirai festival in Madurai, two fatalities occurred, prompting public concern. Authorities have since clarified that neither death was directly linked to the festival’s events. The first incident involved a 17-year-old boy, S. Jayavasikaran from Kariapatti, Virudhunagar district. He drowned in the Vaigai River near Sholavandan while playing in the water with a friend. The river’s strong currents, intensified by water released from the Vaigai Dam for the Kallazhagar ritual, swept him away. Although his friend was rescued, Jayavasikaran could not be saved. His body was later recovered, and a case has been registered by the police.
The second case concerned a 42-year-old homeless man, K. Marikannan from Sellur, who was found deceased near the Yanaikkal new bridge. Initial rumors suggested his death resulted from the festival crowd. However, police investigations confirmed that he died of natural causes unrelated to the festival.
In response to these incidents, the police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring public safety during large gatherings. They have urged attendees to adhere to safety guidelines and remain vigilant during such events.
