Chennai has seen a concerning rise in sudden cardiac arrests (SCA) among young adults, including students, professionals, and athletes. Experts cite causes such as undiagnosed heart conditions, stress, unhealthy lifestyles, and post-COVID complications.
“Many young people are unaware of underlying heart conditions that can trigger sudden cardiac events,” said Dr. Ramesh Kumar, Cardiologist, Chennai. “Regular health screenings like ECG, echocardiogram, and stress tests can save lives.”
Doctors also emphasize the role of lifestyle. “Balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and avoiding harmful substances are crucial for heart health,” noted Dr. Anita Raj, Preventive Medicine Specialist.
Stress management is equally important. “High stress and poor sleep significantly impact heart health in young adults,” Dr. Kumar added. Awareness and early detection remain key to preventing these tragic events, experts say.
Parents and educators are urged to pay attention to warning signs such as unexplained fatigue, shortness of breath, or chest discomfort during physical activity. “Even minor symptoms should not be ignored. Early intervention can be life-saving,” said Dr. Anita Raj.
Healthcare providers in Chennai are also advocating for community awareness programs, including heart health workshops and free screening camps. “Creating awareness about the risks and preventive measures can help reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac arrests among our youth,” Dr. Kumar concluded.
