Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) Founder and Lok Sabha MP Thol Thirumavalavan has raised serious allegations regarding the handling of the Karur stampede, which claimed 41 lives. He questioned why cases were not registered against actor-turned-politician Vijay and the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Founder, suggesting a possible indirect and tacit pact between the DMK, TVK, and BJP.
Speaking to reporters in Tiruchy, Thirumavalavan criticized Vijay’s claim in a video address that he was not responsible for the tragedy and had only addressed the rally. He asked why the State police did not register cases against the actor and whether they were hesitant to do so. He also implicated the BJP, questioning if there was a secret understanding between the three parties.
Referring to cases booked against four key TVK functionaries – General Secretary Bussy N Anand, Deputy General Secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar, and Karur functionaries Mathialagan and Pounraj – Thirumavalavan asked why Vijay was not booked in connection with the incident. While Mathialagan and Pounraj were arrested, police teams are still trying to trace Anand and Nirmal, who have sought anticipatory bail from the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court.
Thirumavalavan held Vijay responsible for arriving late at the rally, which contributed to the tragedy, questioning why cases were registered against others but not him. He alleged a tacit and indirect pact between the DMK government and TVK. He further claimed that both the DMK and State police were reluctant to book cases against the TVK founder while taking action against other functionaries.
He asked, “If there is no prima facie case against Vijay, how can there be primary cases against others in connection with the incident?” He also raised concerns over political pressure preventing action against Vijay.
Thirumavalavan alleged that Vijay was acting under the instructions of the RSS and BJP, releasing his video message three days after the tragedy, and that his political moves were influenced by BJP strategists. He claimed the saffron party aimed to divide minority votes using Vijay and asserted that TVK would not join the NDA led by AIADMK and BJP.
He accused BJP of shielding Vijay, asserting that the actor’s political foray was not independent but guided by BJP elements. Drawing a parallel with Anna Hazare, Thirumavalavan claimed BJP was attempting to weaken AIADMK through Vijay. He also warned that if Vijay’s “dangerous politics” prevailed in Tamil Nadu, the State could become a battleground.
Criticizing Vijay’s recent video message as “politically insincere,” Thirumavalavan said the statement appeared scripted under RSS and BJP influence. He advised Vijay to think independently and speak his mind to have a meaningful political future, cautioning that failure to do so could lead to consequences.
Thirumavalavan dismissed Vijay’s attempt to blame former minister and DMK Karur District Secretary V. Senthil Balaji, calling it baseless. He emphasized that the stampede was caused by overcrowding, not any political conspiracy.
