Chennai’s five major drinking water reservoirs are currently holding an impressive 86.53% of their total storage capacity, ensuring a robust water reserve for the upcoming months. Official data reveals that out of a combined capacity of 11.757 TMC (thousand million cubic feet), these lakes collectively hold 10.174 TMC at present.
Thanks to consistent inflow from recent rains, all the lakes have witnessed significant boosts in their water levels. The key reservoirs and their current storage percentages include Chembarambakkam at 88.75%, Puzhal at 89.51%, Poondi at 84.86%, Cholavaram at 73.91%, and Kannankottai at 88.8%.
This steady water availability comes as a relief amid concerns over urban water demand, supporting Chennai’s drinking water needs for the months ahead. With sustained monsoon rains and controlled reservoir management, officials are optimistic about maintaining a stable supply and averting potential shortages in the near future.
The healthy storage levels also reflect ongoing efforts to manage the city’s water resources efficiently, reinforcing Chennai’s preparedness for both domestic consumption and industrial demand. This article uses the latest reservoir levels and water storage data to highlight Chennai’s favorable water situation as of late 2025.
