The remnant of Cyclonic Storm Ditwah, which had earlier weakened into a deep depression, brought rains to several parts of the State.
Continuous heavy rainfall has been lashing the city and its surrounding districts.
While the Red Alert issued for Tiruvallur district has now been downgraded to an Orange Alert, similar Orange alerts are in place for Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Ranipet districts due to the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
In view of the prevailing weather conditions, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges In Chennai and Thiruvallur districts. The torrrential rains battered the Chennai and adjoining district of Tiruvallur and other districts for the whole day yesterday.
According to the MeT department, the system is likely to move slowly towards the North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast and weaken further into a well-marked low-pressure area.
Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected across several parts of the state in the coming days.
