The Tamil Nadu government has invited leaders of government employees’ and teachers’ unions for talks on December 22, aiming to defuse escalating protests ahead of the assembly elections.
The unions have been protesting over unfulfilled promises made by the DMK in the 2021 assembly elections, including restoration of the old pension scheme and resolution of other service-related demands. Following the government’s failure to implement several commitments, the unions intensified their agitation, planning further actions in the run-up to the polls.
The meeting is scheduled at 10:00 AM in the consultation room on the 10th floor of Namakkal Kavignar Maligai, Chennai Secretariat. Ministers E.V. Velu (Public Works), Thangam Thennarasu (Finance), and Mahesh (School Education) will participate along with union representatives.
The government stated that it intends to address multiple demands raised by the employee and teacher associations. The outcome of these talks could influence worker sentiment ahead of the elections, as previous rounds of negotiations have provided partial resolutions but left key issues pending.
The talks are being closely watched by political analysts, as the outcome could have broader implications for the DMK government’s image among public sector employees and teachers. With assembly elections approaching, both the ruling party and opposition are keenly observing the developments, and any failure to reach a satisfactory resolution may escalate unrest and impact voter sentiment across the state.
