The Tamil Nadu government has set up district-level technical committees to examine and address the pressing demands of broiler poultry farmers following sustained protests and political agitation in the state. These panels are tasked with consulting poultry farmers and other stakeholders, studying challenges in production operations, assessing input costs and quality, and recommending solutions to improve productivity and resolve industry concerns. Each committee will review issues including disease incidence, gaps in veterinary services, and production-procurement mismatches. They will also work closely with key district collectors to submit practical recommendations for resolution.
The formation of these panels comes as AIADMK MLAs staged a walkout in the Tamil Nadu Assembly to protest the denial of an opportunity to raise poultry farmers’ grievances during Zero Hour — highlighting widespread distress in the sector, which involves nearly 20,000 farm owners and about 66 integrators across the state.
Farmers have been demanding a substantial increase in rearing charges to offset rising operational costs, and government’s move to form focused district groups is being seen as a step toward addressing those long-standing issues.
