The Tamil Nadu government has formally insisted that Karnataka release 250 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water from the Cauvery River as per its allocation under the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award. The demand was reiterated ahead of intensified discussions between the two states over water sharing for the upcoming agricultural season.Senior officials from Tamil Nadu have communicated the state’s position to the Karnataka government, asserting that timely release of the 250 TMC allocation is essential to support irrigation needs, particularly for paddy cultivation and groundwater recharge in the delta districts. The appeal highlights concerns over farmers’ livelihoods and drying water sources if adequate flows are not maintained.
Tamil Nadu has also urged Karnataka to adhere to previously agreed schedules and maintain bilateral cooperation to avoid escalation of disputes. The water sharing issue surfaced amid discussions on reservoir levels and the anticipated monsoon outlook, with both states monitoring rainfall patterns and agricultural demands.
Political leaders and farmer organisations in Tamil Nadu have backed the government’s firm stance, calling for sustained pressure to secure the full water allocation. They argue that any shortfall in Cauvery releases could significantly impact cropping decisions, water availability for drinking purposes, and overall rural economy in the state.
