Chennai, June 24:
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) has urged the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that families of workers who died in the ammonia gas leak at a seafood export unit in Tiruvallur receive a compensation of Rs 25 lakh from the company. The party alleged that the tragic incident was caused by serious safety lapses and negligence on the part of the management.
To press its demands, the CPM has announced a protest in front of the Tiruvallur Collectorate on June 25. The party aims to highlight what it calls inadequate compensation and demand stricter accountability from both the company and authorities.
CPM State Secretary P. Shanmugam stated that the unit had not undergone any safety inspection since December 2025. He further alleged that underage workers were employed and that several migrant workers from states like Manipur, Assam, and Odisha were not properly registered under labour laws. He also pointed out that workers were living in unsafe conditions within the factory premises.
The party criticized the State government’s announcement of Rs 2 lakh compensation as insufficient and called for enhanced relief for the victims’ families. It also demanded proper compensation for the injured and advanced medical treatment for those undergoing care.
Emphasizing the need for stronger enforcement of factory safety norms, the CPM urged the government to take strict action against the management and implement measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
