The Tamil Nadu Transport Department has issued a strict circular prohibiting the use of three-wheeler auto rickshaws and two-wheelers for commercial goods transport across the State. Authorities have warned that vehicles found violating the order during inspections will be seized immediately. The move follows complaints from the Tamil Nadu Auto and Call Taxi Drivers Federation, which alleged that passenger vehicles were being misused for cargo delivery through app-based platforms such as Rapido and Porter. Driver unions had also staged protests demanding action against what they described as unauthorized goods transport operations.
As part of enforcement, transport inspectors have been directed to conduct surprise checks, particularly during peak morning and evening hours. If two-wheelers or autos are found carrying goods for commercial purposes, they will be seized on the spot, and details of the associated app service will be forwarded to the Transport Commissioner’s office.
Officials said the directive is aimed at regulating the sector, protecting licensed goods vehicle operators, and ensuring strict compliance with transport regulations in Tamil Nadu.
