A massive new bus terminus is set to open at Thirumazhisai, near Kuthambakkam on the outskirts of Chennai, in a major push to streamline long-distance bus operations and reduce traffic congestion within the city.
The upcoming facility is expected to be even larger than the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus at Kilambakkam and is designed to ease the growing pressure on Chennai’s existing bus stations. Strategically located along the city’s western corridor, the new terminus will cater primarily to long-distance and inter-district bus services, helping divert heavy vehicular movement away from the city core.
Officials said the project aims to modernise passenger infrastructure by offering improved waiting halls, better parking facilities, streamlined bus bays and enhanced commuter amenities. The terminus is also expected to improve traffic flow on arterial roads and reduce congestion in key city areas.
Once operational, the Thirumazhisai facility is likely to benefit thousands of daily commuters and outstation travellers, marking a significant addition to Chennai’s expanding transport infrastructure network.
