The Chennai Hotels Association has warned that the ongoing shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has reached a critical level, threatening operations across the city’s food and hospitality sector.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the association’s president, M. Ravi, highlighted that disruptions could affect hospitals, IT parks, college hostels, train services, and business travellers, all of whom rely on timely food supply.
The concerns come amid a recent increase in LPG prices due to the Iran-Israel-US conflict, which has disrupted key energy shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz. Household LPG cylinders were raised by Rs 60, while commercial cylinders saw a hike of Rs 115.
Industry leaders emphasised that hotels operate on a 24×7 basis, and any interruption in commercial LPG supply could severely impact essential services. They urged the central government to take immediate measures to stabilise supply and support businesses that provide critical food and catering services in the city.
