The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is on course to achieve its property tax collection target for the financial year 2025–26, reflecting steady growth in civic revenue.
Robust Collection Figures
According to officials, the corporation has already collected ₹1,881 crore in property and professional taxes, surpassing the ₹1,855 crore collected during the same period last year. The civic body is now aiming to reach its property tax target of ₹2,020 crore before the close of the financial year.
Professional Tax Sees Uptick
Revenue from professional tax has also shown a notable increase. Collections have touched ₹406 crore this year, compared to ₹382 crore in the previous fiscal, indicating improved compliance among taxpayers and steady economic activity in the city.
Digital Push Driving Growth
Officials attributed the improved performance to a series of digital and administrative initiatives. These include expanded use of online payment platforms, deployment of point-of-sale (POS) machines, and timely reminders to taxpayers.
Better coordination with banks has also helped prevent last-minute glitches, making the payment process smoother and more accessible for residents.
Strong Benchmark from Previous Year
In the financial year 2024–25, the GCC recorded a total tax collection of ₹2,750 crore, including ₹2,020 crore from property tax and ₹550 crore from professional tax. This strong performance has set a high benchmark for the current fiscal year.
Final Push Underway
With the financial year nearing its end, the corporation is intensifying efforts to maximise collections. Officials said the focus is on encouraging pending taxpayers to clear dues, ensuring seamless digital transactions, and meeting or exceeding the set revenue targets.
Civic authorities remain confident that the corporation will achieve its goals, further strengthening Chennai’s urban financial system.
