Seven fishermen from Tamil Nadu were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, accused of illegally crossing the International Maritime Boundary and fishing in Sri Lankan waters, according to reports from Maalaimalar.
The incident occurred near Neduntheevu where the group was reportedly fishing when Sri Lankan naval personnel intercepted them on suspicion of entering foreign territorial waters. The seven men, along with two fishing boats, were taken into custody and transported to the Kankesanthurai naval base for further questioning and investigation by Sri Lankan authorities.
Such arrests have been a recurring issue for the Tamil Nadu fishing community, particularly for those venturing into the Palk Bay and Palk Strait regions, which lie close to the boundary between India and Sri Lanka. Fishermen in the area often face challenges related to unclear maritime borders and the risk of inadvertently entering Sri Lankan waters.
