Chennai, Mar 26:
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has unveiled plans to transform areas around 41 metro stations into integrated multimodal hubs to enhance last-mile connectivity and commuter convenience.
A tender has been floated to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) covering a 500-metre radius around each station, marking the first step in the ambitious project. The initiative aims to facilitate smooth interchange between metro, buses, autos, taxis, MRTS, and suburban rail, addressing long-standing challenges faced by daily commuters.
Key improvements proposed include pedestrian-friendly infrastructure such as continuous footpaths, shaded walkways, and skywalks; dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones for autos and taxis; relocation of bus stops closer to metro stations; and improved feeder services with barrier-free access.
The move comes in response to frequent complaints about poor pedestrian access, unsafe crossings, and lack of coordination between different transport systems.
All 41 stations, including major hubs like Central, Egmore, Guindy, Saidapet, and Alandur, will undergo upgrades, with high-traffic areas expected to see significant improvements in commuter facilities and connectivity.
