Puducherry, March 26:
Tensions within the alliance have escalated as the Indian National Congress has reportedly filed nominations in three constituencies that were expected to be allocated to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, setting the stage for a direct contest between the allies.
According to party sources, despite ongoing seat-sharing discussions, Congress candidates have entered the fray in the three constituencies sought by VCK. With today being the last date for withdrawal of nominations, there are no indications so far that Congress will pull back its candidates.
The development has effectively placed both parties in direct competition in these constituencies, leading to confusion among cadres and supporters of the alliance. The situation marks a rare instance of allies contesting against each other despite being part of a broader coalition.
VCK leadership has already expressed dissatisfaction over the handling of seat-sharing talks, accusing Congress of lack of coordination and clarity. The latest move is seen as further deepening the rift between the two parties.
With the deadline for withdrawal closing today, political observers are closely watching whether any last-minute changes will occur. However, the absence of withdrawal signals suggests that a multi-cornered contest is now inevitable.
The direct clash between alliance partners could split votes and impact the overall performance of the coalition in Puducherry. It also raises questions about coordination within the alliance at a critical stage of the election process.
