Chennai, Apr 2:
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami alleged that nearly 18,000 children were subjected to sexual harassment during the five-year rule of the DMK government, intensifying the political war of words ahead of the Assembly elections.
Addressing campaign events in Sivaganga district, Palaniswami accused the DMK regime led by M. K. Stalin of failing to ensure safety for women and children. He claimed that thousands of minors had been affected by such incidents during the current government’s tenure.
The AIADMK leader cited official data, stating that thousands of cases had been registered under the POCSO Act, with compensation provided in several instances. He questioned the government over what he described as a deteriorating law-and-order situation, alleging that even vulnerable sections were not adequately protected.
Palaniswami also launched a broader attack on the ruling party, accusing it of ignoring serious issues and engaging in political rhetoric. He warned that continued criticism from the DMK would be met with strong responses from AIADMK cadres.
The remarks come amid an increasingly heated campaign environment, with both the DMK and AIADMK stepping up attacks on governance, law and order, and welfare delivery.
The DMK has not immediately responded to the specific allegation. However, such claims are expected to become a key flashpoint in the ongoing election campaign, as parties seek to shape voter perception on safety and governance.
The issue of women and child safety continues to remain politically sensitive in Tamil Nadu, with opposition parties frequently targeting the government over reported incidents and administrative response.
