Chennai, April 4:
In view of the upcoming Assembly Elections 2026, the Madras High Court has announced holidays for courts across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to facilitate smooth conduct of polling and encourage public participation in the democratic process.
According to the official notification, all courts in Puducherry will remain closed on April 9, the day of polling in the Union Territory. Similarly, courts across Tamil Nadu will observe a holiday on April 23, when voting will take place in the state.
The holiday will apply to the Madras High Court, its Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, as well as all subordinate courts and tribunals functioning under its jurisdiction. Officials stated that the decision has been taken to ensure that members of the judiciary, court staff, and litigants are able to exercise their franchise without inconvenience.
The move is seen as part of broader administrative measures to support the electoral process, ensuring that institutional functioning does not hinder voter turnout. Authorities expressed confidence that the arrangement will contribute to greater participation in the elections across both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
