Chennai, Apr 16:
Tamil Nadu is witnessing severe summer conditions, with temperatures crossing 105°F in multiple locations, even as weather authorities predict light rainfall in parts of the State over the next few days. The continuing heatwave has raised concerns about public health and heat-related stress, particularly in interior districts.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), at least 13 places recorded extremely high temperatures on Wednesday, indicating the persistence of harsh summer conditions. The highest temperature of 105.8°F was registered in Paramathi Velur, making it one of the hottest locations in the State.
Other regions also reported intense heat, with Vellore recording 104.72°F, followed by Madurai (Airport) at 104.36°F and Tiruchirappalli at 104.18°F.
Temperatures hovered around 104°F in Erode, while Namakkal and Salem recorded over 102°F. Districts such as Dharmapuri and Tirupattur also experienced temperatures exceeding 102°F, underscoring the widespread nature of the heatwave.
Meteorologists attribute the current weather pattern to a trough extending from southeast Madhya Pradesh to the Gulf of Mannar, passing through central and southern parts of the country. The Regional Meteorological Centre noted that this system is influencing both the heat and the expected rainfall activity.
Despite the scorching conditions, light rain is likely to occur at isolated places in the Western Ghats districts, delta regions, coastal areas, including Ramanathapuram and Karaikal, until April 21. These showers may offer temporary relief but are unlikely to significantly bring down temperatures in the interior regions.
In Chennai and its suburbs, the IMD has forecast partly cloudy skies, which could moderate conditions slightly. However, interior districts are expected to continue experiencing above-normal temperatures at least until April 19.
Authorities have advised the public to take adequate precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours, and taking measures to prevent heat-related illnesses.
With the dual impact of extreme heat and sporadic rainfall, Tamil Nadu is set to experience fluctuating weather conditions in the days ahead.
