Chennai, May 1:
A major transport infrastructure upgrade is underway on the outskirts of the city with the upcoming Arignar Anna Bus Terminal at Kuthambakkam near Thirumazhisai.
The project, estimated to cost around ₹400 crore, is being positioned as a significant step toward easing congestion and strengthening regional connectivity.
Often dubbed “Kilambakkam 2.0” in reference to the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus, the new terminal is expected to decongest the city by diverting a substantial portion of outbound and interstate bus traffic away from central Chennai.
Authorities believe the facility will play a key role in streamlining long-distance travel, particularly for routes heading towards western and northern parts of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states.
Planned as a modern, integrated bus terminal, the project aims to provide improved passenger amenities, better traffic management systems and seamless connectivity to major highways. Its strategic location near Thirumazhisai is expected to reduce travel time for commuters while also minimising bottlenecks within the city.
Officials say the terminal will complement existing infrastructure and serve as a crucial node in Chennai’s expanding transport network, catering to increasing passenger demand and supporting future urban growth.
