Chennai, May 7:
Surveillance at the Chennai Central railway station is set to be significantly strengthened, with the installation of 223 modern CCTV cameras currently underway.
Railway Protection Force officials said the move is aimed at enhancing passenger safety and ensuring round-the-clock monitoring across the station. The installation is expected to be completed by the end of May.
The new system will include a mix of advanced camerasâaround 150 fixed cameras for continuous monitoring, 45 ultra-high-definition cameras for sharper visuals, 14 pan-tilt-zoom cameras capable of capturing footage in all directions, and seven zoom cameras for detailed tracking.
The move comes in response to increasing concerns over illegal activities, including smuggling of gold, cash, and narcotics through rail routes, as well as theft and unauthorised occupancy within station premises.
Officials noted that while CCTV cameras are already installed in certain areas, the new system will provide comprehensive coverage and improved clarity, enabling quicker response to incidents and better coordination among security agencies.
