Chennai, May 8:
Actor-politician and MNM chief Kamal Haasan on Thursday asserted that the majority to form a government must be tested on the floor of the Assembly and not at the Raj Bhavan, adding his voice to the ongoing debate over government formation in Tamil Nadu.
His remarks come amid the continuing impasse, with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar insisting on documentary proof of majority before inviting the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the government.
Kamal Haasan emphasised that constitutional principles and judicial precedents favour a floor test as the appropriate mechanism to determine majority, arguing that insisting on prior proof undermines the democratic mandate.
TVK, led by C. Joseph Vijay, has emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats but is yet to receive an invitation to form the government.
Vijay has met the Governor and staked claim, but the Governor has maintained that clarity on numbers is required before proceeding further.
Kamal Haasanâs statement adds to growing political pressure for a floor test, even as the stalemate over government formation in the State continues.
