Chennai, May 9:
As summer rain activity intensifies across Tamil Nadu, residents of Chennai have been witnessing early morning showers accompanied by strong winds over the past two days, offering temporary relief from the scorching heat.
In a dramatic incident reported early today, a century-old peepal tree inside the Alayamman Temple premises near Teynampet Signal was uprooted due to heavy winds and fell onto the road.
Officials from the electricity board, police department, and the Greater Chennai Corporation rushed to the spot and are currently engaged in clearing the fallen tree and restoring normal traffic movement in the area.
The massive tree reportedly damaged a portion of the temple wall and a nearby streetlight when it collapsed. Fortunately, no pedestrians or vehicles were present at the time, preventing what could have been a serious accident.
The incident underscores the impact of sudden weather changes and gusty winds currently affecting several parts of Chennai during the ongoing spell of summer rains, prompting authorities to remain alert to similar risks.
