Chennai, June 23:

The death toll in the devastating ammonia gas leak at a private prawn processing factory in Tiruvallur district has risen sharply, with at least nine people now confirmed dead, while dozens of others remain in critical condition

The tragic incident occurred at a seafood export unit in Kannigaipair village near Periyapalayam, where ammonia gas reportedly leaked during industrial operations. The factory, involved in prawn and fish processing, was functioning when the leak spread rapidly, exposing workers to toxic fumes.

Initial reports had indicated two deaths and several hospitalisations. However, the toll later increased to seven, and has now climbed further to nine, highlighting the severity of the incident.

More than 60 workers were affected by the gas leak, many of whom complained of breathing difficulties, eye irritation, and dizziness. Several victims collapsed on the premises due to prolonged exposure to ammonia.

A significant number of those injured are reported to be in critical condition, with many shifted to government hospitals for intensive treatment as their health deteriorated.

Rescue teams, including fire and rescue personnel and medical units, rushed to the spot soon after the leak was reported. Workers were evacuated from the factory, and those affected were immediately transported to nearby hospitals.

Authorities also initiated measures to contain the gas leak and prevent further spread, while surrounding areas were monitored for safety.

The Tamil Nadu government has taken serious note of the tragedy and ordered an immediate high-level investigation into the incident. Earlier, directions had already been issued to form a committee comprising officials from industrial safety, pollution control, and public health departments to probe the cause of the leak and submit reports within a strict timeline.

Officials stated that the inquiry will examine safety lapses, compliance with industrial regulations, and accountability of the factory management.

The incident has sparked widespread concern over safety standards in hazardous industrial units across the state. The scale of the leak and the rapid rise in casualties have raised questions about monitoring mechanisms and emergency preparedness in such facilities.

Political leaders and activists have demanded strict action against those responsible and called for stronger enforcement of safety norms to prevent similar disasters in the future.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on saving the lives of those critically injured and ensuring accountability for one of the most serious industrial accidents reported in the region in recent times.
