Chennai, June 25:
In a major political development that could reshape equations in Tamil Nadu, former AIADMK minister and ex-Viralimalai MLA C. Vijayabaskar is all set to formally join the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on June 29. The induction ceremony is expected to take place at a grand public event in Neelankarai, with Chief Minister and TVK president C. Joseph Vijay personally presiding over the occasion.
Vijayabaskar’s move comes close on the heels of his resignation from the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and his exit from the AIADMK. His sudden decision triggered intense political speculation across the state, with many anticipating a significant shift in his political allegiance. The confirmation of his entry into TVK now marks one of the most notable defections in recent times.
Having been a prominent face in the AIADMK and a former minister, Vijayabaskar’s transition to the ruling party signals not just a personal political recalibration, but also a potential strengthening of TVK’s grassroots and regional influence—particularly in central Tamil Nadu.
Sources indicate that Vijayabaskar’s induction was preceded by a series of high-level discussions with the TVK leadership. A key meeting took place on Wednesday at his Chennai residence, where he held detailed talks with TVK general secretary and Water Resources Minister N. Anand.
The meeting, which reportedly lasted over an hour, is believed to have focused on finalising the terms of his entry into the party. Discussions are also said to have included the role Vijayabaskar would play within the organisation and how his political experience could be utilised in the party’s future plans.
Vijayabaskar’s entry into TVK is being viewed as a strategic gain for the ruling party. Known for his administrative experience and strong political network, especially in the Pudukkottai region, his presence could bolster TVK’s organisational strength ahead of future electoral battles.
For the AIADMK, however, the development comes as a setback, as it loses yet another experienced leader at a time when the party is working to consolidate its base.
The June 29 event in Neelankarai is expected to be a high-profile political gathering, with senior TVK leaders, party cadres, and supporters in attendance. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s presence underscores the importance the party attaches to Vijayabaskar’s induction.
Political observers note that the optics of the event—featuring a former opposition heavyweight joining hands with the ruling leadership—could send a strong message about TVK’s growing influence and appeal.
As Tamil Nadu’s political landscape continues to evolve, Vijayabaskar’s move could trigger further realignments within opposition ranks. Whether this marks the beginning of a larger trend of defections or remains an isolated shift will become clearer in the coming weeks.
For now, all eyes are on June 29, when a seasoned political figure takes a decisive step into a new chapter—one that could have lasting implications for the state’s political dynamics.
