Chennai, June 26:
Former Tamil Nadu Minister V. Senthil Balaji has stated that the electricity sector in the State witnessed significant revival during the previous government led by former Chief Minister M. K. Stalin under the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
Speaking on the issue, he said that when the DMK assumed power, the State’s electricity utility, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation, was facing a severe financial crisis with a high revenue deficit and operational challenges. He attributed the situation to the policies of the preceding administration.
Senthil Balaji noted that the then government undertook several corrective measures to stabilise the sector. These included tariff revisions, strengthening billing and collection mechanisms, and streamlining power procurement. As a result, the revenue deficit was brought down significantly while ensuring consistent power supply across Tamil Nadu.
He further pointed out that welfare measures such as subsidies for farmers and domestic consumers were continued even as financial discipline was improved. The reforms, he said, helped maintain uninterrupted electricity during periods of high demand.
Reiterating his stance, the former Minister said the previous DMK regime laid a strong foundation for a sustainable and efficient power sector, combining fiscal responsibility with public welfare.
