Tamil Nadu School Education Minister A Rajmohan on Thursday announced that the state government will constitute a committee headed by a retired judge to monitor the collection of school fees and address complaints of overcharging.
The proposed panel, which will include education experts, is expected to examine grievances related to excessive fees and ensure greater transparency in private school fee structures. The move comes amid growing concerns from parents about rising educational costs.
Speaking to reporters, the Minister said the government is also preparing several key announcements for the upcoming state budget, following detailed studies on integrating modern technology into classrooms. Among the initiatives under consideration is the introduction of a dedicated computer science subject for students from Class 6 onwards.
In addition, the government plans to improve basic infrastructure in schools, including better maintenance of toilets and other essential facilities, particularly in government institutions.
Highlighting recent trends, Mr. Rajmohan said enrolment in government schools has increased this academic year compared to the previous year. He attributed this rise to growing public confidence in the quality of education offered in government primary schools.
The department is also focusing on reducing dropout rates. “We are identifying students who have discontinued their education and taking steps to bring them back into schools,” the Minister said.
The formation of the fee-monitoring panel is seen as part of broader efforts by the state government to strengthen accountability, improve educational standards, and make schooling more accessible and affordable for all.
