Puducherry, Aug 10:

Marking a new chapter in the annals of the Union Territory of Puducherry, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Sunday presented the President’s Colours to the Puducherry Police and hailed the conferment as a testament to the force’s bravery, hard work and dedication.

After inspecting a guard of honour presented by the police, he presented the Presidential colours to the Puducherry uniformed force’s Ensign Officer at a ceremonial function held in the presence of  Lt.Governor K.Kailasanathan, Chief Minister N.Rangasamy and DGP Shalini Singh at the Police Training Ground at Gorimedu.

“Receiving the President’s Colours is the highest honour for any disciplined force, Heartiest congratulations to CM of Puducherry, the State Government, the police force and the people of Puducherry on the Puducherry Police receiving this prestigious honour”, Amit Shah said in his address

The emblem symbolizing the bravery of the Puducherry Police, which is responsible for maintaining law and order across the four geographically separated regions of Puducherry, is proudly flying today.

Despite its relatively small strength, the Puducherry Police, through its valour, service and dedication, is effectively shouldering the responsibility of safeguarding Puducherry while preserving its rich spiritual heritage

Describing Puducherry as a living symbol of India’s spiritual and cultural consciousness, he said despite having remained under French rule for a long period, Puducherry has preserved its Indian identity and spiritual vitality.

The valour of the Puducherry Police, which stood steadfast on the front lines and served the people during the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis, will be etched in golden letters in its history

Terming the receipt of President’s Colours as one of the most prestigious moments for any police force, the Union Home Minister the Puducherry Police is entrusted with the responsibility of protecting Puducherry, ensuring its internal security and safeguarding its honour. The Puducherry Police has received this prestigious honour in recognition of its hard work, valour, service and dedication.

He said despite having remained under French rule for a long period, Puducherry has preserved its Indian identity and spiritual vitality. The post of Director General of Police was created in Puducherry on October 1, 1963, and since then, the Puducherry Police has strengthened the internal security of this border region.

Amit Shah said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Government has replaced the penal codes enacted by the British with three new criminal laws. These new laws are not merely punitive in nature; rather, their objective is to ensure justice for citizens in a technology-enabled and time-bound manner.

The new criminal laws are built on three pillars — Technology, Timeline and Trust, he noted.

Observing that Modi has taken several steps over the past 12 years to strengthen the Union Territories, Mr Amit Shah said the Central Government has undertaken several development projects for the people of Puducherry to strengthen the Union Territory. The four-laning of National Highway 332-A has been undertaken at a cost of Rs 2,200 crore. The Centre has also constructed an extended runway here, approximately 3,400 m long and 45 m wide.

Amit Shah said that from 1950 to 2014, the Union Government had provided only /rs 3,500 crore to Puducherry for developmental works. From 2014 to 2026, the Modi Government has provided Rs 13,762 crore for the development of Puducherry, which is nearly four times the amount provided earlier. Over the past nine years, the Union Government has also facilitated industrial investments worth Rs 39,000 crore in Puducherry and the people of the UT have benefited from initiatives such as Lakhpati Didi, Jal Jeevan Mission, Ayushman Bharat, construction of toilets, the free foodgrain scheme, Ujjwala Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

The Union Home Minister said under the leadership of Modi, the Union Government was committed to the development of Puducherry and remains ready to serve its people round the clock.
