Chennai, Aug 10:

A Special Court in Chennai trying cases against MPs and MLAs has framed charges against Former DMK Minister Ma.Subramanian in the case pertaining to allegedly transferring a housing plot belonging to the State-owned  Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) to his wife using fake documents, setting in motion the process of commencement of trial.

The charges were also framed against the former Greater Chennai Corporation Mayor and Health Minister’s wife Kanchana in connection with the case.

When the case came up for hearing before Jusde C Sanjay Babu for framing of charges last evening, both Subramanian and his wife, appeared before the Court.

When the Judge read out the charges, they pleaded not guilty and denied the charges levelled against them.

After framing of charges, the Judge adjourned next hearing in the case to August 31 when the trial would formally commence with the examination of prosecution witnesses.

The prosecution case was that Subramanian, during his tenure as Chennai Mayor between 2006-11 when the DMK was in power, had transferred the SIDCO land at Guindy in the city in the name of his wife by using fake documents.

had misused his official position and facilitated the transfer of land allotted to S.K.Kannan to his wife’s name using fake documents.

The case was filed by a resident of Saidapet, from where Subramanian was twice elected to the State Assembly in 2016 and 2021 elections, before he lost the recent polls to the ruling TVK candidate, police registered a cases under various sections of IPC and under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Though the local police initially conducted the probe, it was later transferred to the CB-CID wing of the Tamil Nadu police on the orders of the High Court and filed the chargesheet in 2019. However, charges could not be framed against them as the duo moved the High Court which had refused to quash the chargesheet, dismissed their pleas and directed the couple to face the trial.

In this scenario, Subramanian and his wife appeared before the Special Court leading to framing of charges following which the trial is all set to commence on August 31.
