Cairo/New York, Sept 26:
Iran has proposed a seven-day plan to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and halt fighting in the wider Middle East conflict, with Tehran awaiting an official response from the United States.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said the proposal had been conveyed to Washington through Qatar. Under the plan, normal maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz could resume within seven days if the necessary conditions were accepted.
The proposal comes amid continuing disruption to oil flows through one of the world’s most important shipping routes. Iran has also been engaging with Saudi Arabia as diplomatic efforts intensify at the United Nations General Assembly.
However, Reuters reported that US President Donald Trump had rejected the proposal, citing a Wall Street Journal report. Iran said it was still waiting for an official American response.
