Kyiv, Sept 26:
Ukraine’s largest steel plant has suspended production after repeated Russian missile strikes damaged the facility, highlighting the growing impact of the war on the country’s industrial sector.
ArcelorMittal said it had informed the Ukrainian government that safe and sustainable operations at its Kryvyi Rih plant were no longer possible following four strikes in five weeks. The company said the attacks had caused extensive damage and resulted in the deaths of five workers.
The shutdown came after Russian strikes on Kyiv killed seven people, including a 14-year-old boy, and injured 58 others on Friday, according to Ukrainian authorities.
ArcelorMittal said it expected to record a non-cash impairment charge of about $1 billion. The Kryvyi Rih plant has been an important part of Ukraine’s steel industry, which has faced severe disruption since the beginning of the war.
