Chennaai, Sept 30:
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has quashed the chargesheet filed against the parents of Surjith, who is accused of murdering software engineer Kavin in Tirunelveli in an alleged honour killing case.
Justice R Vijayakumar passed the order quashing the chargesheet against Surjith’s father Saravanan and mother Krishnakumari. Both have consequently been discharged from the murder case.
Kavin, a software engineer from Thoothukudi district, was allegedly hacked to death in broad daylight on July 27, 2025, over his relationship with a woman. Since Kavin belonged to a Scheduled Caste community, the murder was alleged to have been caste-motivated.
The case was initially investigated by the Palayamkottai police and was later transferred to the CB-CID. Surjith, the woman’s brother, was arrested along with her father Saravanan and relative Jaipal. Krishnakumari, who was serving as a Sub-Inspector in the Tamil Nadu Special Police Force, was arrested by the CB-CID nine months later. Both her and Saravanan had been suspended following the incident.
Meanwhile, the High Court dismissed Jaipal’s petition seeking to quash the chargesheet against him.
VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan criticised the court order and said the party would seek steps for an appeal against it. He said the chargesheet had been quashed before the trial and expressed concern over the implications of the order. These were his reactions to the court’s decision.
