Saudi Arabia is preparing a potential military offensive against Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen, according to officials familiar with the preparations.
The proposed operation is aimed at regaining control of the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key route for international shipping. Saudi-backed Yemeni forces would reportedly lead ground operations, with Saudi air support. The United States and other partners are expected to provide intelligence or defensive assistance rather than participate directly in combat.
Saudi Arabia is considering either a focused operation around Bab el-Mandeb or a wider campaign involving several fronts in Yemen. The developments come amid wider tensions involving Iran, the Red Sea and other major shipping routes in the region.
