Children’s library in Chennai gets attractive amenities

Chennai: The children’s section at G E Indirani Library on Dr Ramasamy Salai, K K Nagar, in the city, has got a fresh lease of life.

Samskriya Foundation launched Samskriya Knowledge Centre recently to attract more children.

Speaking to News Today, Samskriya Foundation managing trustee Sandhya Jaichandren said,”We wanted to give a good atmosphere for children visiting libraries. So, through Samskriya Knowledge Centre, we have provided 600 creative and colourful books, two tables and 10 chairs. Apart from it, we have provided two computers where children can do online projects.”

She further said science classes are bring conducted twice a month, where children get to learn hands-on.

The library, inaugurated 17 July 1982, was functioning as a part time library, and from 2014, it became full-time, and is open from 8 am to 8 pm.

At present, there are 78,404 books and there are 9,885 members, said librarian N Thirunavukarasu.

On an average, 300 to 350 people visit the library on a daily basis, he said, and added that there are special sections for women and those preparing for competitive exams.

During the launch of knowledge centre, N Dillibabu, a regular visitor to the library paid Rs 1,500 as membership fee for 50 students.

Madras High Court former judge Justice M Jaichandren, Chennai District Library Officer S Elango Chandrakumar, Thirunavukarasu, assistant librarians M Radhakrishan and Vijayalakshmi were present on the occasion.

The library is located at 394/1, Dr Ramasamy Salai, K K Nagar, Chennai – 78. The library is closed on Fridays, second Saturdays and on government holidays.

Thirunavukarasu can be reached at 90809 30286 and Sandhya Jaichandren at 94445 25095.
